A pretty good winters day

I picked Mark up this morning and we decided we’d join the York Bird Club outing to the East Coast, we checked out the Swan Inn area down Bishopthorpe Road on the way over to the meeting point to see if any of the recent Waxwings were there, 30+ were feeding in a Sycamore and were soon joined by a further 50, they all fed avidly in the Sycamores for about 15 mins looking splendid in the early morning sunshine then flew off towards Bishophill, there was also a single Brambling with them. The Club decided to start at Scarborough and we went on ahead calling first at the Mere although there was nothing here apart from the dodgy resident Red Crested Pochard, we joined the others at the Harbour but it was very quiet today, no sign of the Glaucous Gull, a couple of Red Throated Divers were in South Bay and a few Purple Sandpipers were roosting on the outer wall but most unusual for the area was a Buzzard that flew along Castle Hill then circled back over the Harbour being mercilessly mobbed by the local Crows. At this point the Club decided to go to Scalby Mills but with the tide being in we didn’t see much point in that so headed off to Holbeck to have lunch with the Med Gulls, an adult and two 2nd winters duly obliged then with news that one of the Richard's Pipits from yesterday was still on the Golf Course at Flamborough we headed off there, the bird had gone missing when we first got there but it was soon relocated and showed really well for much of the afternoon, it was a bit far for photography really but as usual I took a few record shots anyway.
